On March 31, 2014, Pluto TV debuted its beta website. It was founded by Thomas V. Ryan (former Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy at EMI and co-founder of now-defunct digital music retailer CDuctive), Ilya Pozin (founder and former CEO of venture builder firm Coplex), and Nick Grouf (co-founder and managing director of venture capital firm Alpha Edison) to provide curated channels of existing online content (including Funny or Die, QVC, Refinery29, RocketJump and TYT Network). Pluto Inc., which had raised $13 million in series A funding from investors including Universal Music Group, Sky plc, UTA Ventures, and venture capital firms U.S. Venture Partners (USVP), QueensBridge Venture Partners, Pritzker Group Venture Capital, Luminari Capital, Great Oaks Venture Capital, and Chicago Ventures in the second half of 2013 and early 2014, was the original owner of the service.
Pluto launched a digital video recorder function on its website called “myPluto” on May 14, 2014, where users could “record” content by clicking a “save show” button, which would archive content from the channel as it aired.
Pluto TV announced on July 1, 2015 that it had signed a deal with Hulu to distribute ad-supported video content that was previously available for free on Hulu’s website, including current-season episodes of ABC, NBC, and Fox programmes, recent and older classic television series, and domestic and foreign animated programmes. Hulu was in charge of advertising for material available on the Pluto website under the terms of the deal.

Pluto TV and SpotX announced a partnership on March 15, 2018, to provide advertising monetization services for Pluto, including generating sales from media buyers looking to break into over-the-top content providers.
Vizio introduced WatchFree, an ad-supported streaming platform powered by Pluto TV, on August 1, 2018. This service, which is advertised as having “an easy-to-navigate, cable-like interface,” is built into certain models of Vizio’s range of Internet-connected smart TVs, notably those supporting its SmartCast operating system.
With the debut of a platform on Sky’s Now TV service in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2018, Pluto TV expanded across areas of Europe, giving an initial slate of more than 12 handpicked channels.
Pluto TV also chose Tru Optik to assist with advertising inventory in October 2018.
